Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know counselling is right for me?
Counselling can help when stress, anxiety, trauma, relationship challenges, or life changes feel hard to manage alone. If you’re looking for clarity, coping tools, or a safe, non-judgemental space to talk, online counselling is a great place to start. Telehealth Counselling Australia offers accessible, compassionate support wherever you are in Australia.
Counselling can also assist NDIS participants in working towards both short- and long-term goals. With an understanding of the challenges that come with living with a disability – including barriers to daily activities and participation – support is tailored to help you build confidence, independence, and wellbeing in everyday life.
What is Telehealth counselling?
Telehealth counselling allows you to access professional support with online video sessions or phone calls, from the comfort and privacy of your own home. Sessions are conducted securely using video or phone technology, giving you the flexibility to choose what works best for your situation.
If you prefer not to use video, or if you live in a rural or remote area with limited internet access, phone counselling appointments are also available. This ensures that you can receive the same high-quality, private and confidential care no matter where you are in Australia.
Do I need a referral to book a session?
No referral is required. You can book your Telehealth counselling session directly through our website and choose a time that suits you. If you’re unsure, you’re welcome to contact us first – we’ll guide you through the simple next steps.
I live in a remote area in Australia, can I access your services?
Do I need to attend an initial intake session?
Yes. All new clients begin with an initial intake session. This first online appointment helps determine whether the counsellor, services, and approach are the right fit for your needs. It also ensures that your individual goals, preferences, and support requirements can be fully met. The intake session is an opportunity to discuss what you’d like to achieve through Telehealth counselling and how the available services can best support your wellbeing.
What happens in the first session?
Your first session is a gentle “get to know you” appointment. We’ll talk about your goals, background, and current challenges, then work together to create a plan that feels realistic and supportive. Sessions are held online through secure Telehealth platforms, so you can attend from the comfort of your own home.
Is Telehealth secure and confidential?
Yes. All sessions are private and confidential, with information shared only with your consent or where safety requires it. Telehealth Counselling Australia uses secure, healthcare-grade platforms that comply with Australian privacy and data protection standards, including the Privacy Act 1988 and Health Records Act 2001 (QLD).
We use Cliniko as the cloud-based practice management software for healthcare and allied health professionals. It manages online bookings, secure digital patient records, invoicing, and telehealth services. Cliniko uses ISO 27001 (Information Security Management System), providing a framework to manage risks proactively, ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of health information, which is vital for meeting requirements under regulations such as the Privacy Act 1988.
We also use NovoPsych, a secure clinical documentation tool designed for health professionals. Lyrebird helps ensure accurate record-keeping and allows your counsellor to focus more on you during each session. All information recorded through NovoPsych is encrypted, confidential, and used solely to support your care – it is never shared with anyone outside your healthcare team without your permission.
What happens after I reach my goals?
Once you’ve achieved your goals, we’ll celebrate your progress and discuss how to maintain your wellbeing long-term. Many clients choose to book occasional check-ins or return later if new challenges arise. Support is always available whenever you need it.
Can you write me a report?
Yes. Reports can be provided for clients and NDIS participants as part of Telehealth counselling services. Progress summaries can also be prepared to support NDIS plan funding reviews, goal setting, or new funding applications. A minimum of six sessions is generally required before a report can be completed to ensure accuracy and meaningful insights.
What types of counselling do you offer?
We provide personalised individual counselling (18 years and above), and NDIS counselling – all available online through secure Telehealth platforms or phone calls. Each service is designed to help you improve wellbeing, build resilience, and work towards balance and independence.
How old do I have to be to access counselling services?
At Telehealth Counselling Australia, our services are designed for adult clients aged 18 years and over who are seeking support with:
- Anxiety, stress, and emotional overwhelm
- Life transitions, relationship challenges, or personal growth
- Career or workplace concerns, including burnout and confidence
- Disability-related experiences, adjustment, and identity
- Building resilience, self-awareness, and coping strategies
How often should I attend counselling sessions?
This depends on your goals and personal needs. Many clients start with weekly sessions to help you stay on track, then move to fortnightly or monthly sessions as progress develops. Person-centred care means that we will find a schedule that works best for you.
FAQs for NDIS Clients
Do I need counselling included in my NDIS plan to access services?
Yes. To use your NDIS funding for Telehealth counselling, your NDIS plan must include counselling and / or rehabilitation counselling under Capacity Building Supports. This ensures that your sessions are covered by your plan and aligned with your individual goals.
If counselling isn’t currently listed in your NDIS plan, you can still access sessions privately. Many participants choose to add counselling at their next plan review once they experience the benefits of professional support for wellbeing, confidence, and independence.

Yes. Reports can be provided for clients and NDIS participants as part of Telehealth counselling or rehabilitation counselling services. Progress summaries can also be prepared to support NDIS plan reviews, goal setting, or workplace rehabilitation needs. As a qualified Rehabilitation Counsellor, vocational assessment reports are provided to address your vocational and employment needs.
